Fractures a Sign of Nursing Home Abuse

San Antonio Nursing Home Abuse Lawyer

Nursing home residents have an increased risk of falling. As many as 3 out of 4 residents in nursing homes fall each year (Rubenstein et al. 1994). This is a significant amount of falls, considering that 1.5 million people 65 and older lived in nursing homes in 2003 (National Center for Health Statistics 2005).

Common Causes of NursingHomeFalls:

Memory problems and chronic illnesses afflict many nursing home residents. Combined with frailty and age, it is a recipe for disaster.

  • 24% of nursing home resident’s falls are attributed to muscle weakness and walking/gait problems (Rubenstein et al. 1994).
  • Hazards such as wet floors, inadequate lighting, incorrect bed height and improperly fitted wheelchairs cause 16% to 27% of resident’s falls (Ejaz et al. 1994; Rubenstein et al. 1994; Ray et al. 1997)
  • Medication can escalate the risk of falls and injuries. Sedatives and anti-anxiety drugs affect the central nervous system (Mustard et al. 1997; Ray et al. 2000).
  • Difficulty moving from place to place, poor foot care, improper fitting shoes, incorrect use of walking aids, can all play a role in nursing home falls ( Ray et al. 1997; Tinetti 1987).

Fall Prevention in Nursing Homes

Any fall is serious and deserves immediate attention. Of all fractures, hip fractures are the most deadly and lead to the most severe health complications. In 1996 there were approximately 340,000 patients admitted to the hospital for hip fractures. Some preventive measures to consider are:

  • Modifying the nursing home environment to make mobility safer. Using grab bars, raised toilet seats, lower bed heights and handrails in the hallway can reduce the risk of falls.
  • Reviewing and reducing prescription medication if necessary.
  • The use of hip protectors is recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Hip protectors reduce the effects of falls.
  • Using alarms or other devices when patients try to move without assistance.
